Legislative Activity
During the plenary session on Tuesday, March 18, I called on the Senate to expand the scope of a motion moved by Senator Aniekan Bassey, representing Akwa Ibom North East. The original motion sought the establishment of an ad-hoc committee to investigate the illegal annexation of mangrove islands located in Efiat Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State by the Republic of Cameroon.
I intervened and amended the motion to include all disputed maritime territories, which covers parts of Cross River State.
Following brief contributions from the Senate President and my colleagues, my proposal was unanimously adopted. As a result, the Senate established an ad-hoc committee to investigate the illegal annexation of all disputed maritime territories between Nigeria and Cameroon. The committee has been tasked with reporting its findings and providing recommendations for further action.
The amended motion which now includes all disputed maritime territories, including some parts of Bakassi, is crucial for the people of Cross River State. For the people of Bakassi, this amendment will help enhance security and protect their livelihoods, promote economic development and empower the local communities. I believe that this is a significant step towards ensuring that the rights of our people and territories are protected and respected.
